Summary

 This book was about a mouse that smells many aromas from a traditional Mexican holiday festival, Cinco de Mayo! The mouse followed his nose to the festival to get some delicious treats. There was a lot of activity going on. The mouse then became fixated on a piñata and wanted a piece of candy. The mouse did not notice he was being followed by a cat that wanted to eat him. The mouse climbed a rope trying to get into the piñata when a kid hit it. The cat was waiting on the mouse to fall so he can eat him but the mouse flew somewhere else. The cat was trampled by kids that picked up all the candy off the ground. The mouse luckily found one piece of candy and then went home happy.

 

 

Evaluation by Genre

The genre of this book is fantasy picture book. We know what happened with the mouse could not happen in real life. The characters were well developed and the plot was structured carefully in this book.  

 

Evaluation by Illustrations

 The illustrations are realistic.  The colors are vivid and the shapes are meaningful and significant. They go along well with the festival activities and Mexican traditions. The text lines up with the illustrations and establishes the mood, setting, theme, and characters in the story. It also teaches you the cultural heritages and customs. Like what they eat, what they wear, and what they do.

 



Motivational Activities

 Cinco De Mouse-O was intended for ages 4 and up. It was an amazing book that captured the Mexican holiday and made it come to life.

 

• Have some of the Mexican items laid out on a table. While reading the book aloud, have the children pick which item you are discussing.
• Have the children decorate their own sombreros or piñatas.
• Have the children color different styles of sombreros or piñatas.
• Play an instrument along with the story and have children identify the sounds.

Readers Comments

I learned more about the Mexican Fiesta that had me starting get hungry with all the foods they were eating. I also learned some traditional Mexican customs in this book. I really enjoyed this book and the colors painted an even bigger imagination for me.
